Buka Airport(BUA)-Buka is the provincial capital of the Autonomous Region of Bougainville. Buka town is one of the fastest growing and upcoming townships in the New Guinea Islands region. Located amongst the scenic group of the Solomon Islands it heralds some of the most beautiful tropical islands and reefs in the area. Cocoa and copra supplement the economy, after the Bougainville Crisis, saw the closure of the Panguna copper mine, operated then by Bougainville Copper Limited. This conflict ended in 1997. A peace agreement was finalized in 2000 which provided for the establishment of the Autonomous Bougainville Government and the election of the first president, late Joseph Kabui in May and June 2005. Bougainville has a population of 175, 160 (2000 census) and covers a land area of 9,300 square kilometers. The region also has other smaller islands apart from the main land Bougainville. They include Buka,and the Carterets Island. The province is accessible by sea and air. Air Niugini operates three flights from Port Moresby to Buka per week.
