For overseas travellers interested in experiencing the Kokoda Trail, Papua New Guinea’s only international airport is located in Port Moresby. This airport provides connecting flights to Papua New Guinea from the vast majority of the world’s major cities as well as direct flights from Australia, the Solomon Islands, Singapore, the Philippines and Hong Kong.
Once travellers arrive at Port Moresby, they can then connect to other flights and locations in Papua New Guinea. For the more adventurous travellers, Port Moresby is located within driving distance of the trail’s entrance at Owers Corner, which is around 50 kilometre east of the airport. Trekkers will either hike north from Owers Corner in the Central Province to Kokoda in the Oro Province and fly back to Port Moresby when they complete the trail or they will fly to Kokoda first and then shuttle to Port Moresby upon finishing the 96 kilometre journey.
Other flights to Papua New Guinea cities include a PNG tourism tour of the provincial capital, Popondetta, which can be reached by an approximately 30 minute drive from the nearby Girua Airport or by an approximately 4 hour public motor vehicle ride from Kokoda.
The key is to ensure you give yourself plenty of time to make the journey to Kokoda.
