Air Niugini will promote its expanded service into Fiji by airing a special one-hour documentary on Karawari, in the East Sepik Province.
The one-hour documentary will air on Tuesday March 22 at 7pm on free-to-air television station Fiji 1.
The program documents the journey of visitor to Papua New Guinea who goes in search of the highly-prized Dendrobium lasianthera orchid, commonly known as the Sepik Blue.
The Sepik Blue is the unofficial national flower of Papua New Guinea and is unique to the Yimas Lakes region of the East Sepik.
Chitti Ratanapeanchai arrived in Papua New Guinea via Air Niugini’s direct service from Singapore. Mr Chitti is one of Thailand’s leading orchid growers and has a huge orchid farm two hours drive out of Bangkok. Many of his new hybrids are being developed using pure-form Papua New Guinean orchids.
Mr Chitti was understandably very excited about going directly to the source of these natural wonders. He had only read in books about the pristine environments and habitats of the various species of Dendrobium orchids in Papua New Guinea.
Mr Chitti is accompanied on his journey by Justin Tkatchenko, who also presents the television program.
Justin is one of the foremost authorities on orchids in the region, which is matched by his knowledge and passion for Papua New Guinea, its people and diverse cultures.
The stunning and ancient landscape of the region is further enhanced in the program by a soundtrack provided by leading Papua New Guinea musician Pius Wasi who, himself is from the East Sepik Province. Pius provides haunting traditional bamboo flutes and his vocal talent to create a soundscape as timeless and ancient as the land itself.
Karawari. A Journey into the East Sepik Province of Papua New Guinea premieres on Fiji One on Tuesday March 22 at 7pm. Presented by Justin Tkatchenko.
Written and produced by Glenn Armstrong.
