Air Niugini has assisted flood victims in Solomon Islands by uplifting relief supplies weighing 2, 492kg out of Port Moresby to Honiara free of charge(foc).
The relief supplies were delivered to Air Niugini Cargo terminal today(Fri 13th June 14) by the Solomon Islands High Commissioner to PNG, His Excellency William Nii Haomae and his staff.
The supplies included clothing and kitchen utensils, donated by church groups, corporate companies, schools, the Solomon Island, Fiji and PNG communities living in Port Moresby.
Air Niugini’s General Manager-Commercial, Mr Dominic Kaumu who was present during the delivery said the airline does this as part of its community service obligation.
He said “ As a regional carrier and also as a brother in the Pacific, we as the airline and the country feel obliged to support our Melanesian brothers and sisters in the Solomon Islands who have been affected by the floods.”
He added that this was not the first time, the airline has supported victims of natural disasters.
“ We do this all the time both within the country and also abroad where we operate to. Air Niugini had uplifted medical supplies free of charge for communities affected by floods in Fiji in 2012 and also our own people of Oro Province during the floods in 2007.” Kaumu said
Since the floods in Solomon Islands in April this year, atleast 23 people have died and over 10,000 made homeless.
Air Niugini has been operating to Honiara, Solomon Islands for over 30 years. The airline currently operates three times a week to Honiara, every Tuesday, Friday and Sunday.
